Mrs. Joyce Lester Presley, age 85, of the Fletcher’s Ridge section of Vansant, Virginia passed away Saturday (November 2, 2019) in a Grundy, Virginia hospital. Born October 7, 1934 in Hurley, Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Ernest and Loria Smith Lester. She had spent most of her life in Buchanan County, Virginia and had been employed with Buchanan County School System for fifty-four years. Education was her life’s work; she devoted her entire career to promoting quality education for the children of Buchanan County. In her spare time, she enjoyed flower arranging and wreath making and was an avid Virginia Tech Hokie fan. She was a devoted wife, a loving sister and a friend to all who knew her.
Survivors include her husband of fifty-one years, Maxwell “Mack” Presley of the home; three sisters, Geraldine Watson of Cincinnati, Ohio, Sandra Kay Lester of Hurley, Virginia and Christine Doughten of Grundy, Virginia; one brother, William B. Lester of Richmond, Virginia; two sisters-in-law, Betty Rose of Bristol, Tennessee and Barbara Presley of Bristol, Virginia; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 AM Wednesday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Shawn Street officiating. Entombment will follow in the Ketron Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at Lebanon, Virginia.
Pallbearers will be Robert Rife, Allen Rose, Greg Rife, Paul Hayes, Larry Fields and Randy Rose.

Ms. Lester taught me typing at Hurley High (the old one) in 11th and 12th grades in 1963 and 1964 . She was a wonderful teacher and person. And so very beautiful. She will be greatly missed. Praying for her loved ones.

Joyce will always be known for her various contributions in the Field of Education in Buchanan County. Those contributions were the result of her creativity, initiative, futuristic thinking, coupled with her labors of love. Her achievements touched many a life.
The poet Hayden says, “ What do we know of Love’s austere and lonely Office. Thank you, Joyce , for who you are to me.”
Rosemarie MIller. Retired Buchanan County Teacher.

Joyce Ann was a bigger than life person. She inspired so many people as she taught school and became a respected leader in the school system. She was so knowledgeable and yet so humble. Because of her influence I became an educator and strived to be as good a teacher as she was. We have lost a wonderful person and my heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family. Sandy Smith Spears

Mack, so sorry for the loss of your companion. I first met Joyce back in 1974 when she signed work permits for my 14 and 15 year old summer workers for the Buchanan Dickenson Rural Area Development Corporation. She was nice to me then and that continued for the next 45 years. She helped me and worked with me in the many differant positions I held in the Buchanan County School System. Her work and dedication with the school system was one for the ages. May God be with you and other family members in the days ahead.
