Mrs. Fonnie Rowe Hess, age 96 years, 9 months, and 5 days, of Honaker, Virginia passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2019 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Hess was born in Skeggs, Virgina (Buchanan County) and was the daughter of the late Rev. Ellis Rowe and Louise Anne McGlothlin Rowe. She was a lifelong resident of the Buchanan and Russell County areas. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who cared for all those around her. She was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith who served God and taught her children to love God and keep his commandments so that all the family could be together in Heaven someday.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-mother Martha Rowe Hall, her husband of sixty-six years, Elihue Hess, one son, Danny Firl Hess, and one grandson, James Marcus VanDyke as well as three brothers, Earl, Dexter, and Soul Rowe, and two sisters, Pearl Rowe and Allie Hess.
Survivors include one son, Rev. Gary Hess and wife Dr. Brenda Hess of Rosedale, two daughters, Anna Ruth Hess VanDyke of Honaker, and Kathleen Hess Osborne and husband Rev. Bob Osborne of Cedar Bluff, Virginia. Two brothers Ellis B. Rowe and wife Joyce of Morristown, Tennessee and Fred Rowe and wife Elizabeth of Rowe, Virginia. One sister, Patty Rowe Taylor and husband Andy of Abingdon, Virginia. One sister-in law, Opal Rowe of Rowe, Virginia and one brother-in-law, Brady Hess of Richlands, Virginia. Three grandchildren: Dr. Vonda Kay VanDyke Swartz and husband Wendel of Kingsport, Tennessee, Gary Michael Hess and wife Dr. Monna Hess of Springfield, Ohio, and Anthony Wayne Hess and wife Barbara Hess of Lexington, Virginia. Three step-grandchildren: Dr. Beth Osborne Skinner and husband Larry of Bristol, Tennessee, Rebecca Osborne Harmon and husband Michael of Bristol, Tennessee, Deborah Osborne Wyatt and husband, Jeff of Richmond, Indiana. Five great-grandchildren: Ava and Elise Hess of Springfield, Ohio, Kyle and Liam Hess of Lexington, Virginia, and Cady Ray VanDyke of Graham, Texas. Ten, step-great grandchildren: Allison Jobe, Betsy Jo Figg of Graham, Texas, Glenda Swartz of Kingsport, Tennessee and Melody Russell of Maryland. Jackson and Taylor Skinner and Thomas and Anna Harmon of Bristol, Tennessee. Grace Sommerfeld and Gabriel Wyatt of Richmond, Indiana. Ten step-great-great grandchildren along with a host of several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 30, 2019 at the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker, Virginia with the Rev. Johnny Rowe, Rev. Eddie Street, and Rev. Phillip Horton officiating. Burial will follow in the Family Cemetery at Rowe, Virginia.
Pallbearers will be Gary Michael Hess, Anthony Hess, Wendel Swartz, Brian McGraw, Chester Rowe, and Herb Jamison.
