Mr. Jimmie Lee Honaker, age 72, of Honaker, Virginia, passed away Saturday (June 22, 2019) in a Johnson City, Tennessee hospital. Born January 6, 1947 in Richlands, Virginia, he was a son of the late Paul Henry and Margaret Elizabeth Price Honaker. A lifelong resident of the area, he was a member of Gent’s Chapel Church for over forty-eight years, where he had formerly served as superintendent. He served the Lord faithfully and used his God-given talent to spread the gospel through song. He was a retired coal miner, having been employed with Pittston Coal Company for over thirty years. He was a member of the UMWA and was currently serving on the UMWA Sub 28 Chaplain Corps. A devoted member of the Honaker Volunteer Fire Department for over thirty-five years, he earned the nickname “Poppaw” by the younger firefighters, due to the work ethic and leadership qualities he displayed to those on the department. He enjoyed fishing, tending to his vegetable garden, but most of all spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one infant sister, Mandy Honaker, three brothers, Jessie Honaker, Halford Honaker, and Bennie Honaker, sister-in-law, Rita Honaker, brother-in-law, Harold Hess, and two nieces, Stephanie Honaker and Suzy Taylor.
Survivors include his wife of fifty-one years, Kathy Honaker of the home; one son, Jimmy Lee Honaker and wife, Christy of Honaker; two grandchildren, Austin Honaker and Anna Honaker; one sister, Dolly Hess of Honaker; five brothers, Jerry Honaker and wife, Ruth, Sam Honaker and wife, Regina, and Bradley Honaker and wife, Karen all of Honaker, Wayne Honaker and wife, Saundra of Swords Creek, and Calvin Honaker and wife, Nina of Norton; several nieces, nephews, and many friends also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Tuesday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, Virginia with Rev. Johnny Woodward officiating. UMWA honors will be conducted by UMWA Sub 28 Chaplain Corps. Interment will follow in the Austin Cemetery at Venia, Virginia.
Pallbearers will be members of the Honaker Volunteer Fire Department.
Honorary pallbearers will be David Honaker, Lester Honaker, Valerie Rice, Darnell McGlothlin, Foster Bailey, Thomas Austin, and Tommy Meade.
The family will receive friends at the Honaker Funeral Home after 6:00 PM Monday.
