Obituary

Mr. Jacky Ray, age 72, of the Call Valley section of Swords Creek, Virginia, passed away Saturday (June 1, 2019) at his home. Born September 25, 1946 in Swords Creek, Virginia, he was a son of the late Garnett Lee and Gladys Miller Ray. A lifelong resident of the area, he was of the Pentecostal faith. He had been in the coal mining business for over twenty-five years, owning and operating Jacky Ray Coal Company, Shannon Coal, and Eastco Coal Company. An accomplished musician, he had a talent for Bluegrass Music. In addition to playing music, he enjoyed riding his Harley, working on cars and anything that needed fixing, but most of all spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by infant brother, Thomas Eugene Ray, daughter-in-law, Melissa Ray, and sister-in-law, Carol Ramey.
Survivors include his wife of fifty-five years, Wanda Whited Ray of the home; two sons, Kim Ray and wife, Michelle, and Shannon Ray all of Swords Creek; two grandchildren, Austin Ray and Lexi Ray of Swords Creek; three sisters, Lucille McGlothlin and husband, Ferrell of Swords Creek, Sue Miller and husband, Eugene of Honaker, and Reba Robinson and husband, Robert of Swords Creek; one brother, Keith Ray of Swords Creek; special companion pet, El Gato; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 PM Monday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, Virginia with Rev. David Perkins officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Tuesday in the Ray Cemetery at Call Valley, Virginia. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to assemble the cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Mike Miller, Rodney Miller, Brandon Miller, Dylan Ramey, Rick Thomas, Doug Whited, and Clinton Ramey.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jacky’s honor to St. Judes Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
The family will receive friends at the Honaker Funeral Home after 5:00 PM Monday.

I remember racing go-carts with him in the late 70's, i painted a couple race cars for him. He told many times that my dad Troy Steele " he made a man outa me" although I've been in carolina for many years I've always considered Jacky a friend. Rest in peace ol buddy
