Mr. Bernard Glen Sykes, age 89, of Council, Virginia passed away Wednesday (May 1, 2019) at Maple Grove Nursing Facility in Lebanon, Virginia surrounded by his family. Born June 20, 1929 in Council, Virginia, he was a son of the late John Morgan and Bessie Lester Sykes. A lifelong resident of Buchanan County, Virginia, he was a disabled employee of the Virginia Department of Transportation leaving as Bridge Supervisor. He was of the Freewill Baptist faith and had been a devoted and faithful member of Russell Fork Freewill Baptist Church for sixty-seven years. Having a love for music, he was always ready to sing and share a song with others. He enjoyed fishing and working in the garden, but most of all spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Woodrow Sykes, Hattie Ball, Thurman Sykes, Trinkle Lee Sykes, Monroe Sykes, and John Morgan Sykes, Jr. In his generation, he was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Survivors include his loving wife of sixty-seven years, Virginia Edith Sykes of the home; four daughters, Janice Sue Sykes Ball of Meadowview, Debora Ann Sykes Penley of Honaker, Barbara Elaine Sykes Skeens of Blountville, and Pauline Michelle Sykes Christopher and husband, Anthony of Hackberry, Louisiana; nine grandchildren, Jerry Ball, Terry Ball, Cody Ball, Angela Johnson, Amy Penley Clark, Fredrick Skeens, Leeann Mims, Travis Skeens, Chanse Ball, and Kasey Sykes; great-grandchildren, Lakin Ball, Emmalee Johnson, Bella Clark, Owen Clark, Matthew Worley and Leo Ball; three great-great-grandchildren, Amelia Ball, Hayden Worley, Adalynn Worley, Daniel Womack, Logan Womack, and Zak Womack; special friends and caregivers, Veronica Neece and John Hobson; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Sunday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, Virginia with Rev. Kyle Ratliff and Rev. Roy Lee Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in the Frank Smith Cemetery on Big A Mountain, Virginia.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Honorary pallbearers will be Harold Breeding, John Hobson, Don “Willie” Benton, Steve Rosenbalm, Wayne Baldwin, and the Staff of Maple Grove Nursing Facility.
The family will receive friends at the Honaker Funeral Home after 6:00 PM Saturday, where an evening service will be conducted at 7:00 PM with Rev. Edward Tiller officiating.
