Obituary

Mr. Lucas “Cotton” Blankenship, age 80, of Drill, Virginia, passed away Friday (April 26, 2019) at his home. Born May 15, 1938 in Drill, Virginia, he was a son of the late Casey Jones and Hattie Hess Blankenship. A lifelong resident of the area, he was a member of Drill Chapel Church and Drill Senior Citizens. He had proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. A disabled coal miner, he had formerly been employed by Jewell Smokeless Coal Company. He enjoyed carpentry work, working in the garden, fishing, but most of all spending time with his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his former wife, Joyce Ann Baldwin Blankenship, brothers, Fred Blankenship, and Isaac Blankenship and his wife, Lucille, one infant brother, James Larkin Blankenship, and one sister, Peggy Martin and her husband, Clarence.
Survivors include his wife, Lucy Blankenship of the home; two sisters, Betty Hess and husband, Don of Drill, and Dorothy Dotson and husband, Buck of Blackford; step-children, Tony Blankenship and wife, Rachel, and Jeanine Israel and husband, Tim; step-grandchildren, Ben Blankenship and wife, Jessica, Cody Israel and wife, Kristy, Brandy Miller and husband, Joel, Stephanie Israel, Katie Caudill, and Beth Blankenship; step-great-grandchildren, Caleb Blankenship, Levi Miller, Malachi Miller, Cole Israel, and Kooper Israel; several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends also survive.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Helping Hands Hospice and their staff for their care, concern, and compassion.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 PM Sunday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, Virginia with Rev. Chester Ball and Rev. David Perkins officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Monday in the Baldwin Cemetery at Drill, Virginia. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to assemble at the funeral home by 10:30 AM.
Military escort will be provided by Fallen Warriors. Military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 9864 of Lebanon, Virginia.
Pallbearers will be Ben Blankenship, Cody Israel, Joel Miller, Jeff Hess, Nelson Ray, Daniel Baldwin, and Leonard Mitchell.
Honorary pallbearers will be Oogie Blankenship, Don Baldwin, Larry “Big T” Thompson, Barney Tiller, Steve Keaton, Larry Mullins and the men of Drill Chapel Church.
The family will receive friends after 5:00 PM Sunday at the Honaker Funeral Home.
