Obituary

Rev. Ettie Connie Ray Hess, age 84, of the Miller Creek section of Swords Creek, Virginia went to be with Jesus on Wednesday (April 17, 2019) at the home of her daughter-in-law, Sue Hess, who was her caregiver. Born October 19, 1934 in Hess Creek, Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Carbet and Gussie Hess Ray. A lifelong resident of the area, she was of the Freewill Baptist faith and attended Perkins Chapel. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother and mother-in-law. She loved to work in her house and spend time with her family and friends, but found her greatest joy in serving the Lord and sharing the Gospel message with others.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Ronnie Hess; one daughter, Nancy Dye; one grandson, Gary Wayne Dye, one granddaughter, Audrey Lynn Rife; two sisters, Betty Rasnake, Juanita Dye and three brothers, Lawrence Ray, Don Ray and Ralph Ray.
Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of sixty-eight years, Berry Holland Hess of the home; one daughter, Mary Ann Dye and husband Rev. Larry Wayne of Honaker, Virginia; two sons, Donnie Hess and wife, Cathy of Baptist Valley, Virginia and Roger Hess and wife, Denise of New Jersey; one son-in-law, Chester Dye and wife, Ebbie; daughter-in-law, Sue Hess and fiancé, Jerry Meadows; six grandchildren, Doug Dye and wife, Teresa, Teresa Dye, Tina Dye, Tonia Royal and husband, Matney, Cindy Ball and husband, Chadrick, Kelly Hess; grandson-in-law, Randall Rife; great-grandchildren, Tiffany Roberts and husband, Kevin, Amber Dye, Sierra Rickman and husband, Jim, Lauren Dye, Brittany Dye, Christian Ball, Madison Royal and Charity Ball; one great-great-granddaughter, Brooklyn Sluss; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends and church family also survive.
The family would like to extend a very special thank you to Ettie’s caregivers, Sue Hess, Andrea Scarberry, Debbie Williams, Rebecca Casey, Kristy Justice and Sara Ellis and all the staff of Legacy Hospice for the wonderful care they provided.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM Monday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Perkins, Rev. Ellis Whited and Rev. Steve Ray officiating. Interment will follow in the Hess Cemetery at Miller Creek, Virginia.
Pallbearers will be Chad Ball, Doug Dye, Christian Ball, Jim Rickman, Jerry Meadows, Matney Royal, Kevin Roberts and Jackie Dye.
Honorary pallbearers will be Frank Dye, Cecil Dye, Raymond Rasnake, Sherman Ray, Bernie Dye and Cecil Dye.
