Mr. Elijah Lester, age 91, of Mavisdale, Virginia, passed away Sunday (April 7, 2019) at his home. Born November 11, 1927 in Buchanan County, Virginia, he was a son of the late William and Victoria Street Lester. A lifelong resident of the area, he was a member of Rowe Pentecostal Church. A retired coal miner, he had worked for forty-two years and was a member of the UMWA. He enjoyed being outside, doing his yardwork, gardening, and working with his horse. His greatest enjoyment came from spending time with his family, especially his great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-two years, Dollie Marcielea Lester, three sisters, Virgie Lester, Velva Lester, and Ruby Cook, one brother, Dewey Lester, one half-sister, Ollie Street, and one half-brother, Roy Lester. In his generation, he was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Survivors include one daughter, Ann Graham and husband, Curtis of Aylett, Virginia; one son, Larry Lester and wife, Terri of Loris, South Carolina; granddaughter, Angela Clisso and husband, Brendan of Abingdon, Virginia; grandson, Sean Graham and wife, Aubrey of Alexandria, Virginia; six great-grandchildren, Jade Clisso, Gage Clisso, Connor Clisso, Cayden Clisso, Landry Graham, and Brinley Graham; nieces and nephews, Eva Sowders, Vernon Cook, Pearl VanDyke, and Marvin Street; great-nieces, May Bradford, Penny Day, and Linda VanDyke; cousins, Otis Street and wife, Joyce; great-great-niece, Vanessaa Kiser; great-great-great-nieces and nephews, C.J. Kiser, Chloe Kiser, Chelsea Kiser, and Chase Kiser; special friends, Diane and Smoke Blankenship.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the employees and staff of Legacy Home Health and Hospice, especially his nurses, Becky, Brooke, Beth, and Johnnetta.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Wednesday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, Virginia with Rev. Brad Cook and Rev. Johnny Rowe officiating. Interment will follow in the Lester Family Cemetery near the home in Mavisdale, Virginia.
Relatives and friends will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at the Honaker Funeral Home on Wednesday from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM.
