Mr. Estel Thomas “Tom” Looney, age 74, of Oakwood, Virginia passed away Thursday (August 2, 2018)at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Virginia. Born October 3, 1943 in Grundy, Virginia, he was a son of the late Estil and Virginia Stiltner Looney. He was a retired coal miner. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather; but above all, he was a devoted Christian. He enjoyed singing and playing music.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one nephew, Donald Brian Looney.
Survivors include his wife of fifty-four years, Phyllis Vandyke Looney; two sons, Jeffery Looney and Diane of Asheboro, North Carolina, Anthony “Pooh” Looney and wife, Connie of Rowe, Virginia; six grandchildren, Jarrid Looney, Victoria “Looney” Roberts, Logan Looney, Caleb Looney, Luke Looney, Ava Looney; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Donald “Duck” Looney of Asheboro, North Carolina; one sister Rhonda Looney of Grundy, Virginia; three special sisters-in-law, Wilma Holmes, Doris Cowart, Kathy Looney, and several nieces and nephews also survive.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the nursing staff of Intrepid Health Care and the Doctors and Nurses of Johnston Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 AM Sunday (August 5, 2018) in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ray Coleman officiating. Interment will follow at the Vandyke Family Cemetery in Oakwood, Virginia.
Pallbearers will be Logan Looney, Caleb Looney, Luke Looney, Roy Roberts, Kelly Holmes, and Chris Stiltner.
Mickey Cowart, Rickey Cowart, Kevin Holmes, Jarrid Looney, Beth Stiltner, Brad Looney, Laura Looney Rutledge, Shawn Looney and the staff of Johnston Memorial Hospital will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive friends after 6 PM Saturday at the Honaker Funeral Home where an evening song service will be conducted at 7 PM with Rev. Michael Justice officiating.
